I have been benching some old system (mostly 486 and early Pentium) and I have been having serious issues with wPrime.

No matter what I do wPrimes cheat detection system seem is being triggered around midnight. I have experimented with with different settings for the system (cache/system/memory timings; over/underclocking etc), but no matter what I do the anti-cheating system still gives me false positives. Could someone please help me out?

Over the past few months we've been toying around with the idea of creating a separate memory benchmark. Our initial thought would be to use the Geekbench 3 and 4 memory tests as a starting point. The memory test work and are well-liked, and moving them into a separate benchmark would give us the opportunity to fix the outstanding issues with them (especially on modern hardware).

If we were to create something that focused on testing memory performance, what would people want to see? What is your wishlist for a memory benchmark?

In the last few weeks I've been working on a benchmark to calculate pi on graphics cards. It's an idea that's in my head for some years now, but I couldn't put it to life until now. Somehow the death of our beloved Turrican inspired me - I wanted to do something good, something that matters. So I tried hard and it finally worked out. I want to dedicate this benchmark to Turrican, like a virtual monument to never forget his legend. A benchmark in his honour.

Together with the community of overclockers.at I've tested the benchmark for the last week and put out some new versions, wrote a technical description and added some frequently asked questions. It's still a beta version, but it should be pretty stable with most of the graphics cards and processors around. But be sure to install the latest GPU/OpenCL drivers for the target device, old ones can be very bugged.

Here are a few examples for calculating the billionth digit of pi:

GPUPI 1B: AMD Radeon R9 290, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 and Intel Core i7-4960X@4 GHz

I think that there's a lot of potential in a benchmark like this, it's just fun to crunch pi on a gpu. If you like it, I would consider implementing multi gpu support and hwbot direct submission. Hello!!

I've been doing some CO tuning to my 5800X3D (system specs below) and also I did some RAM OC with my CPU at stock. In both cases, the stress test I always fail is N63 from YCruncher. I don't know exactly what component this test stresses, since the sensors of my board show that energy, RAM and CPU usage are at "normal" levels, but I fail N63 everytime.

What made me think about this test was that when I was testing my RAM OC (CPU stock) I had several reboots and Event Viewer always pointed to a random core crashing... which I couldn't wrap my head around it since my CPU was at stock and my system is perfectly stable at stock settings (tested for 48hrs straight). It's also important to say that my RAM OC has passed 50 Cycles of TM5 (1usmus_v3), 20 cycles of Anta777's absolut and 15 cycles of Anta777's extreme, so it isn't at borderline stability.

So I'd like to understand what does exactly N63 test stresses so I could make the proper tweakings.

	Thanks!!

	Hey everyone,

I wanted to ask about 3DMark in general. On the 3DMark website, you can connect your 3DMark account with your HWBOT account, but it doesn't do anything. Wouldn't it be nice, if both HWBOT and 3DMark could recognize your achievement equally by for example, getting the results from each other and adding to one another, so we could have more data for you to look at. What do you think?

There has always been a tie between Futuremark and the demoscene. It all started with the benchmark Final Reality, released by Remedy Entertainment in 1997.

Remedy Entertainment was a gaming company, founded by demosceners from the legendary Future Crew and other demo groups. Remedy developed an early 3D acceleration benchmark tool for VNU European Labs, known as Final Reality, which showed obvious links to the demoscene, both because of the demo-like design of its parts, the name “Final Reality” being a reference to the Future Crew demo Second Reality, and the fact that a variation of Second Reality’s classic city scene was included in Final Reality.

After this first benchmark, a separate company focused on benchmarking was founded, which was to become Futuremark. After releasing 3DMark99, they changed their name to MadOnion.com. Then after releasing 3DMark2001, they changed back to Futuremark Corporation. Eventually, after being acquired in 2018 by UL, they changed the name to UL Benchmarks.

With every major milestone of PC hardware and software, generally more or less coinciding with new versions of the DirectX API and/or new generations of hardware, they released a new benchmark to take advantage of the new features, and push it to the extremes.

Traditionally, each benchmark also included a demo mode, which added a soundtrack, and generally had extended versions of the test scenes, and a more demo-like storytelling/pacing/syncing to music. As a demoscener, I always loved these demos. They often had beautiful graphics and effects, and great music to boot.

But, can you still run them? UL Benchmarks was nice enough to offer all the legacy benchmarks on their website, complete with registration keys: Futuremark Legacy Benchmarks – UL Benchmarks

Or well, they put all of them up there, except for Final Reality (perhaps because it was released by Remedy, not by Futuremark/MadOnion). But I already linked that one above.

I got all of them to run on my modern system with Windows 10 Pro x64 on it. I’ll give a quick rundown of how I got them running, starting from the newest.

 3DMark11, 3DMark Vantage, 3DMark06, 3DMark05 and 3DMark03 all installed and ran out-of-the-box.

3DMark2001SE installed correctly, but the demo would not play. Looking at the error log revealed that it had problems playing back sound (which explains why regular tests would work, they have no sound). But when you select the Compatibility mode for Windows 8, that fixes the sound, and the whole demo runs fine.

3DMark2000 was a bit more difficult. On my laptop it installed correctly, but on my desktop, the installer hung after unpacking. The trick is to go to Task Manager, find the setup.exe process in the Details tab, right-click it and select “Analyze wait chain”. It will tell you what the process is waiting for. In my case it was “nvcontainer.exe”. So I killed all processes by that name, and the setup continued automatically.

Now 3DMark2000 was installed properly, but it still did not work correctly. There is a check in there, to see if you have at least 4MB video memory. Apparently on a modern video card with multiple GBs of memory, the check overflows, and thinks you have less than 4MB. It then shows a popup, and immediately closes after you click on it. So I disassembled the code, found the check, and simply patched it out. Now it works fine.

If you want to patch it yourself, use a hex editor and change the following bytes in 3DMark2000.exe:

Offset 69962h: patch 7Dh to EBh
Offset 69979h: patch 7Dh to EBh

XL-R8R dates from the same era as 3DMark2000, and I ran into the same issue of setup.exe getting stuck, and having to analyze the wait chain to make it continue. It did not appear to have a check for video memory, so it ran fine after installation.

3DMark99Max was more difficult still. The installer is packaged with a 16-bit version of a WinZip self-extractor. You cannot run 16-bit Windows programs on a 64-bit version of Windows. Luckily you can just extract the files with a program like 7-Zip or WinRar, by just right-clicking on 3DMark99Max.exe and selecting the option to extract it to a folder. From there, you can just run setup.exe, and it should install properly.

Like 3DMark2000, there’s also a check in 3DMark99Max that prevents it from running on a modern system. In this case, it tries to check for DirectX 6.1 or higher, and the check somehow mistakenly thinks that the DirectX version is too low on a modern system. Again, a simple case of disassembling, finding the check, and patching it out.

If you want to patch it yourself, use a hex editor and change the following byte in 3dmark.exe:

Offset 562CCh: patch 75h to EBh

Final Reality then, the last one. Like 3DMark99Max, it has a 16-bit installer. However, in this case the trick of extracting it does not help us. You can extract the setup files, but in this case the setup.exe is still 16-bit, so it still cannot run. But not to worry, there are ways around that. Initially I just copied the files from an older installation under a 32-bit Windows XP. But an even better solution is otvdm/winevdm.

In short, x86 CPUs can generally only switch between two modes on-the-fly under Windows. So a 32-bit version of Windows can switch between 32-bit and 16-bit environments, which allows a 32-bit version of Windows to run a 16-bit “NTVDM” (NT Virtual DOS Machine) environment, in which it runs DOS and 16-bit Windows programs. For 64-bit versions of Windows, there’s a similar concept, known as Windows-on-Windows (WOW64). This allows you to run 32-bit Windows programs. The original NTVDM for DOS and Win16 programs is no longer available.

Otvdm works around this by using software emulation for a 16-bit x86 CPU, and then uses part of the Wine codebase to translate the calls from 16-bit to 32-bit. This gives you very similar functionality to the real NTVDM environment on a 32-bit system, and allows you to run DOS and Win16 applications on your 64-bit Windows system, albeit with limited performance, since the CPU emulation is not very fast. Because it’s not a sandbox environment like most emulators, but it actually integrates with the host OS via 32-bit calls.

In our case, we can simply run the Final Reality installer via otvdm. Just download the latest stable release from the otvdm Github page, and extract it to a local folder. Then start odvdmw.exe, and browse to your fr101.exe installer file. It will then install correctly, directly onto the host system.

There appear to be no compatibility problems with this oldest benchmark of them all, funny enough, so that rounds it all up.

Here is a video showing all the 3DMark demos:

There is a brand new 3D benchmark out from Basemark called Basemark GPU. It offers a wide selection of resolutions , API's and operating systems support. Developer of y-cruncher here. Looks like a lot has changed since I've last visited.

2.5b is now a thing, but only under BenchMate presumably because I never gave Hwbot the decryption keys for it. (Yes, the program has decryption keys for all the benchmark sizes, but I only submitted the ones for 25m, 1b, and 10b into the system when I first added the benchmark years ago.)

Anything I can do here to make things compatible again? (or just just drop the submitter since BenchMate looks superior in every way)

Staff can DM or email me to take this offline.

	--------

In any case, the reason why I'm here is that y-cruncher v0.8.1 is coming out soon (1-2 months?). Internally a bunch of stuff is getting rewritten so there will be large performance swings from v0.7.10.

One of the things I'm considering changing is to expose more of the program's tuning parameters. For example, each of the binaries have tuning tables that are currently hard-coded. Here is a (semi-contrived) example for cache management:

Don't understand it? That's the point. The average person won't know what to do when thrown into a 747's cockpit.

Many of these (hard-coded) tables are extremely specific to the set of processors that I tune the binaries on. And even within the same processor class one set of settings which are optimal for one chip may be actively detrimental to another. For example, the above is for the Skylake X 7980XE. But it is actively detrimental to the lower core-count chips of the same line.

To summarize, the purpose of exposing more settings is to allow users who know what they're doing to improve performance. However, these parameters are difficult to touch if you don't know what you're doing. Thus it inherently gives an advantage to those who know what they're doing. You can think of this as a motherboard suddenly exposing secondary and tertiary DRAM timings for an OC competition. But instead of for the hardware, it's for the benchmark itself.

So what are people's thoughts about exposing these internal benchmark parameters? How much havoc would it wreck on competitive OC'ing?

Intuition tells me that these internal settings will be welcomed by the folks chasing Pi size records since those tend to run for many months at a time. (Yes, those many-trillion digit computations that require petabytes of storage.

I was always under the assumption that the version history page of System Info has download links to all the old versions but recently learned that is not the case, so I went and backed up as many of them as I could.

	Currently this includes:

Version 5.xx: 73/73 versions as of May 2024. Will be automatically scraped and uploaded to the shared link.

Version 4.xx: 21/38 - missing versions predate the Steam depots and most official builds of 3DMark/PCMark so might never be complete without official help from UL or community.

Version 3.xx: 4 versions, no official version history to track.

Version 2.xx: nothing, does this even exist?

Version 1.xx: 1 version, uploaded for the sake of inclusiveness.

Feel free to download your copies from: https://cloud.genieben.com/s/TXMRf27EM3Qpq6T. Please message me if the link is ever down. Check the changelog file for official download links where available. Most files are downloaded from UL themselves using hidden links or Steam depots, but check with your antivirus for peace of mind. SHA-512 checksum available.

Got a version you want to share with others? Please use the following link to upload it and I will add it to the collection: https://cloud.genieben.com/s/ice3H25XWLPxMPE

I will try to add mirrors in the future to avoid dead links, but will encourage everyone to do a full download and share themselves. Thread will not be updated when new versions are available, but will do my best to update on major news.

I'm trying to submit a score in 1080p X265 for a Pentium 4 1.6 (Willamette, 478), but the submission form will only file it as a Northwood. Is there a way to manually specify the CPU, or do I need to rerun it and choose the manual option when saving?

	Hello everyone,

Since AS SSD 2.0 is not hidden anymore, the issue that was happening before is still relevant and possible.

Basically running a P5800x / P5810x on Windows 7 <s>with Intel drivers</s> has a <s>very high chance</s> 100% chance of bugging out the 4K-64 Read, which results in some unrealistic scores.

<s>You can reruns it a shit load of times, and I assure you, you will get score bigger than 40k.</s>

Edit : I misremembered. You can "bug" out the benchmark without any rerun from a coldboot, and drivers version doesn't matter.

What I would like to enforce is a cleanup of Optane score used on W7 and a rule that forbid w7 and its server counterpart.

	Let's discuss this, thank you

	Hey guys!

Does anyone have the unlocked software version for this graphic card?

It's an old one, shouldn't be problems in sharing it.

	Many thanks!

Would you consider partnering up with? I like this Benchmate software, and I was curious, why there isn't something similar for Linux users? OpenBenchmarking would bring a few more benchmarks, which both platforms, win and Linux, could share.

It is not as fancy as HWBOT, but I have heard that even Intel likes Linux. Maybe if something partnership were to happen, we could ask Intel if they could develop or have something platform-independent for verification for the y-cruncher for example, or I think super-pi also runs on Linux, but I would need to read up on that one.

You can check out OpenBenchmarking here: https://openbenchmarking.org/

On Linux, the paket's name for this is Phoronix Test Suit, which you can check out here, if you like: https://www.phoronix-test-suite.com/ (Yes, it is for both platforms. And Linux would give some older computers a modern platform, without having to bow to the microsoft police.

I think this could be beneficial, even if you just add some of the software for HWBOT's use, it could bring a lot more options for challenges.
