We should find a mix. We have five rounds, each is a standalone competition. So feel free to use ooold stuff at one or two rounds and stuff that is a bit newer^^ at others. I am aware of the fact that 775 and after are not what we need, we had this and it is not really old school like :)

I fully support the notion of limiting a possible 486 stage to exclude AMD DX5, otherwise that's the chip everyone will use. Kinda boring. But whatever - I'd be just as happy to bench mine again.

Love the idea of S4 and some of the other vintage cores being suggested like Klamath and Tbird. I really like where this is going. I think websmile is starting to get a bit anxious about finalizing things, so I'll forgo any further suggestions. Looking forward to it!

Hi "old-schoolers"

:D

We need more proposals and ideas for this contest.

Keep them coming.

Lets try to keep them :

Old school

Fair and simple

Common hardware

Affordable in 2nd hand market

Fun and interesting

Lets do our best.

I know that in the end , not all users will be satisfied and happy (that's almost impossible in such cases).

But lets try to keep the majority happy.

:)

Tasos now manages the proposals and you can re-post your ideas when you checked them again how much sense they make and how doable this all is. As he wrote, please do not go for expensive or unobtainable unicorn hardware and not stuff that is too new, have fun and I hope we can accelerate things a bit. Plan is to lauch the comp early january, so it would be good if we can sort this out until early november

Aquamark3 is BAD aidea, it have some errors with cyrylic vercson of Windows. By default save path ... Рабочий Ñтоли (Eng Desktop), so it can't give the result.

just to clarify everyon, or more or less anything older than ddr2?

think AMD K8 - 'Windsor' will be end of OSiBS HW.

For AMD lowers and K6 core interesting to take K6 without prefix - Silmly first K6 - 166-300 mhz "Little Foot (model 7) "

Please propose a complete round , considering the criteria mentioned above

There have already been some pretty good proposals in this thread, so is there a certain framework you are working with for each round, TASOS? Or do you want round proposals from scratch?

Well, in any case, here are some more round proposals for your consideration...

Round 1: 486

- Stage 1: SuperPi 1M 5x86 + X5

- Stage 2: SuperPi 1M 486-only

- Stage 3: 3DMark99 Max

Round 2: Socket 4

- Stage 1: PiFast

- Stage 2: SuperPi 32M

- Stage 3: Aquamark

Round 3: Socket 7

- Stage 1: Non-Intel or AMD CPU frequency

- Stage 2: Intel-only PCMark 04

- Stage 3: wPrime 1024M full-out (K6-2/K6-3 & multi-socket OK)

Round 4: Socket 423

- Stage 1: RIMM memory frequency

- Stage 2: 3DMark 01SE w/ GeForce2 or Radeon 7000

- Stage 3: HWBOT Prime

Round 5: Socket 754

- Stage 1: "Athlon" PCMark 05

- Stage 2: "Turion/Sempron" Cinebench R15

- Stage 3: 3DMark 05 w/ Radeon 9000

Yes

Please consider the criteria written by me above and also follow the general idea from websmile.

Thanks

It occurs to me - although I'd personally love a chance to bench Socket 4, it may be more difficult to acquire than the others. So I might propose this as a potential replacement round:

Round 2b: Slot 1

Stage 1: PII "Celeron" PiFast (single-slot only)

Stage 2: PII wPrime 32M full-out (multi-slot OK)

Stage 3: 3DMark 2000 w/ PII & GeForce 256

Socket 462

Must be Duron

GF256

3D01

Pifast

Aquamark3

I know that (GF 256) is a unique piece of hardware for old school fanatics , but it's kind of rare and expensive nowadays.

I personally dont have a problem to include it into the competition.

But it would be better if we find more supporters , to approve this vga for any stage or round.

I hope more members will declare interest.

If not , should we consider a cheap alternative of geforce2 MX series ?

We'll see

:)

You make a point, TASOS. It is a legendary piece of hardware, though - and if not in OSIBS, then when do we get a chance to bench it? (Then again, same could be said for Socket 4 I guess - if not OSIBS, when? Never?) It's your call though...

edit - changed my mind about the following:

Backup proposal: Remove Geforce 256 from Stage 2, move Geforce2/Radeon 7000 down to Stage 2, move Radeon 9000 down to Stage 4 and add GeForce 6000/Radeon X800 to Stage 5.

Howabout we just swap in Voodoo2 SLI for GeForce 256 instead?

Round 1: 486

- Stage 1: SuperPi 1M 5x86 + X5

- Stage 2: SuperPi 1M 486-only

- Stage 3: 3DMark99 Max

Boring, as the last time all take AMD DX-5 133Mhz and overclock it to 200 :( It happened before...

Round 2b: Slot 1

Stage 1: PII "Celeron" PiFast (single-slot only)

Stage 2: PII wPrime 32M full-out (multi-slot OK)

Stage 3: 3DMark 2000 w/ PII & GeForce 256

Mendocino 433? wPrime 32M full-out (multi-slot OK) - only - it is all about alone ABIT BP6? Strange choice.

Round 3: Socket 7

A- Stage 1: Non-Intel or AMD CPU frequency

B- Stage 2: Intel-only PCMark 04

C- Stage 3: wPrime 1024M full-out (K6-2/K6-3 & multi-socket OK)

A - is interesting,

but B, why Intel? Lets do with A cpu, but non PCM Benchmark.

C - there is no multiSocket AMD K6-systems in the World.

Round 4: Socket 423

- Stage 1: RIMM memory frequency

- Stage 2: 3DMark 01SE w/ GeForce2 or Radeon 7000

- Stage 3: HWBOT Prime

Think it's ok in general, but remark - RIMM memory frequency only on S423, not 478.

Round 5: Socket 754

- Stage 1: "Athlon" PCMark 05

- Stage 2: "Turion/Sempron" Cinebench R15

- Stage 3: 3DMark 05 w/ Radeon 9000

The worst offer imho. S754 it overclocked practically in every competition with M64 4000+

Turion never been Oldschool it's mobile cpu.

It depends in the end what chips would be allowed but Turions would be acceptable to me and probrably most others too..... Note I said "Most others", honestly I can only speak for myself on that.

In fact I'm cool with anything that runs in a 754 period.

That's cool - they were just some ideas to help TASOS out. Please feel free to refine them, replace them, or submit your own. Personally - I'm up for pretty much anything. I think TASOS has a good idea of what he wants to do with OSIBS this year and I'm excited to find out what he decides.
