June 30Jun 30 In this post, I want to talk about how I modified my case to turn it into a base for my future overclocking setup. Originally, this case (BeQuiet! Silent Base 601) was designed to be as quiet and enclosed as possible, but it has tremendous potential for overclocking with any hardware and any type of cooling solution—especially if you don’t have any other options. The problem with this case stems from its original design, but it’s fairly easy to solve thanks to how well it can be modified without resorting to a drill, saw, or angle grinder.To get it into this state, I only needed these tools: a screwdriver (flathead and Phillips), a utility knife, and a powerful household hair dryer.All the parts I removed to improve airflow and lower the temperature inside the case:Sound insulation on the right side panelSound insulation on the top panel where the buttons are locatedThe front plastic frame through which air originally entered (since the front panel is completely solid)The front panelThe mesh filter at the bottomThe front mesh filter5 plastic plugs inside the case to the right of the motherboardThe SSD bracket on the rear panel that’s mounted directly above the CPU socketThe HDD bracket located at the bottom of the caseThe rear plugs for vertical GPU mountingNOTE 1: Remove all hardware from the PC to avoid damaging any SMD components or accidentally damaging the hardware.NOTE 2 Keep in mind that after removing the soundproofing from the panels with a hair dryer, layers of adhesive will remain on the parts. You can certainly ignore this, but it’s highly recommended to remove the adhesive so it doesn’t cause any problems down the road.I also added 3 fans to the top, bringing the total number of fans in the system to 9 (not counting the graphics card and power supply fans), which provides maximum airflow without using a liquid cooler.All photos are provided below:
