WARNING: This may cause your system not to start. Use at your own risk.

The below procedure allows you to flash an older BIOS on motherboards without USB BIOS Flashback feature. The lack of this feature means there's no simple way to recover if things go wrong.

Software required

  • UEFITool v0.21.5 Thread Mega
  • Intel Flash Programming Tool for ME 11.0 Hwbot (note that you need to unzip using a software which supports RAR5)

Prepare the BIOS file for use with FPT

  1. Get the BIOS for your motherboard in CAP format (in this case MAXIMUS-VIII-IMPACT-ASUS-0019.CAP)
  2. Open the CAP file in UEFITool

    attachment.php?attachmentid=4741&stc=1&d=1474625874

  3. Export to ROM (MAXIMUS-VIII-IMPACT-ASUS-0019.ROM)

    attachment.php?attachmentid=4742&stc=1&d=1474625874

Using FPT to flash the BIOS on your system

  1. Open a command prompt with Administrator rights and navigate to your FPT directory
  2. Flash the BIOS by using the command fpt -bios -f BIOS_FILE.ROM

    attachment.php?attachmentid=4743&stc=1&d=1474626666

Note: There are DOS/EFI/Win32/Win64 versions, this guide uses the Win64 version.

'D:\Flash' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

operable program or batch file.

D:\Flash Programming Tool\WINDOWS64>FPTW64 -bios Z170I-PRO-GAMING-ASUS-0403.ROM

I copied the files you mentioned in the same folder that I have .ROM in but I still get the same message, I'm using Z170E.

I get the same error, the ftp command doesn't exist. I copied the files onto the same folder that my .rom files are located and I still get the message.

fptw64.exe -bios -f file name

Hi Elmor! I tried your method and got "failed to disable write protection for BIOS space"

Mb ASUS z170-AR, bios 3401. I don`t have Flashback feature. Is there a way around it?

Thanks.
