need some help identifying a performance problem 290x

Guys I need some help identifying a performance problem. I am on my 6th video card 290x , out of the first five only one was able to go to 1300 core on LN2 also it did 1290 on cold water weird it clocks almost the same in LN2 and water. I juts received video card number 6 yesterday and I quickly mounted an EK full cover water block. ASIC 76.9 , Elpida Memory , flash PT3 Bios and away I go testing this new one. The card runs at 1345Mhz core 1670Mhz memory on water , just plain water not cold or chilled , at 1.387v in Asus GPU Tweak in DMM 1.43v real. No mods yet. The card scales very well with voltage , and max temperatures while running heaven is 42c core , vrm 1 is 34c and vrm 2 is 36c. Temperatures are great , here comes the but ? but the card does not score properly , it seems to score lower than my other cards on heaven and Fire Strike extreme , my question is what could it be video card has throttle during the benchmark ? Video card needs subzero to score correctly ? Drivers ? I was watching heaven run for hours last night at 180 FPS , average was 174 FPS , it dips in the tessellation test to 165 FPS. But score is abysmal and way off. That was with a 4770K at 4.8Ghz on water , max score I got was 4456 , I had scored 4682 before with another card same cpu clocks and same OS , same drivers , card was at 1290/1581 , so 300 Points difference. I tried lower voltages , lower core clocks ( 1250 ) , lower memory clocks ( 1500 ) and it scored 4384. To end the story short , I am lost why this new card can run so easily at 1345/1670Mhz on water with no mods yet , but it scores very bad. Any idea or hint what could it be ? Any guidance , help , opinion or idea are welcome. * The new card black screen always during any bench but very little maybe 1 or 2 seconds then signal will be back and always finish the benchmark *

pcie 1.0/2.0 or 8x/4x?

pcie-16x at 3.0 , so it's good in that aspect. Thank you for trying to help TerraRaptor , I think I will make a very short video of the video card running full heaven at the end , last test test # 26 at those speeds to see if you guys can tell if the card is throttling , underperforming or what is going on :o

Finally I have an answer after many many long hours testing and re-testing my 290x with every driver available and 3 different OS w7 installations , card has not been volt moded yet. The problem is related to the video card throttling down during heaven , it does it 1340/1677Mhz stable and pass heaven DX11 extreme on water full cover EK H2O block , but the card starts throttling at test #11 once it gets warmed up the clocks goes up and down as well as the FPS ,performance take a nose dive due to the v.core set at 1.43v real via DMM reading , water cannot handle that much heat , LN2 required for stability. Big Thank You to Crustytheclown for all the help. I guess finally I found a Golden card , I am happy as a dog with 2 tails :D. next will be full volt mods and LN2 to make it scream.

Here is a short video I made of a complete run of heaven at 1340/1677Mhz on ambient temps H2O, I selected and only showed the last 2 test #25 and #26 because heaven last almost 5 minutes to run lol , the fps starts very strong from test 1 all the way until test 10 fps are 186 max , average 182 ,then it takes a big performance hit after test 11 once the card is warm game over :/. darn it took my 6 cards to find a golden one. watch the short video and the FPS. Check it out to see what I am talking about. id you are having the same problems as I did , there is your answer.

I have the same problema Chispy...i do Lower result @ 1200/1500 @ 1.4V instead 1180/1400 @ 1.375V on stock cooler...

Yes , that happens a lot ,and it has been confirmed , video card will throttle and score lower if too much voltage or too high clocks is applied , after a long talk with ( thank you ) Sofos , we came to the same conclusion , solution: solder a tiny wire to the video card voltage measuring points , and you have to monitor the real voltages the card is running at with a DMM , and where the card starts throttling at what voltages , then fine tune voltages and monitor them until you find optimal voltages and clocks , every card is different and needs different voltages to run stable ,not all the cards can run high clocks or take high voltages , is more luck than anything else. Just like cpus is a luck of the draw game with this video cards , there are bad cards lemons , very good cards and Golden ones , hence some binning is a must to find the good or golden cards ,hint: Hynix cards always , always score higher , Elpida cards will score lower , so Ram is a big factor on this cards too. Thank you for the feedback , that confirmed again crustytheclown , sofos and my findings while testing this cards. Good Luck !

Kind Regards: Angelo

Thanks for your reply Angelo...I should check my best stable clocks and Voltage...But i can tell you now that the best Voltage for My vga is SAPPHIRE TRIXX +160...So i can run 1180/1410 and i have the bests results...with higher ram frequency or gpu clock the results are Lower...On Unigine Heaven for example, io can do the bench 1200/1410, but the file saved result invalid when i submit on hwbot...mybe the fps throttle ?
