Confused about HWBOT

Recommended Posts

Okay, so, I thought if we submitted things in sections and ways that others have not submitted yet, we're supposed to get rewarded in decent points for it, or at least something.

First example here, I've submitted the only results using a AMD K6-2+/550 with a Geforce2 Ultra. I did get a silver cup for one submission, but exactly 0.0 hardware points, the other one got no cups but 0.1 hardware points. I realize these aren't the fastest processor, fastest single video card, nor the fastest geforce2, but they -ARE- unique entries with no competition.

And then here, I also submitted the only results with a AMD K6-2+/550 with a Riva TNT2 M64, no cups, one is exactly 0 points the other is only 0.1

Third example, if you look at all submissions using a 7950 Gx2 video card in an I7-950, you can see I've submitted the only one for that combination with 3Dmark 2006. Again, I understand it's not the fastest for the 7950 gx2, nor the fastest for that processor, but it -IS UNIQUE- and no one else has submitted any like that, yet I only got 0.1 points for it???

So if we're not getting rewarded for unique submissions where we have no competition (I thought that was one thing we could get points for in this website???) then I guess I can just totally forget about ever submitting anything to this site in the future, as it's a complete waste of time.

I could never hope to ever compete with any of the top spots in any category for any hardware because always the people that use phase/LN2 cooling take top spots and there's no chance for any normal people to ever compete with that.

I was hoping I'd get points for unique submissions since I can't compete for top spots, but that doesn't reward points either, so... there's nothing I can do to be useful here.

1. 3DMark 2000 is not awarded with points at all.

2. Why would you be awarded points for running a certain CPU/GPU Mix? There are so many combinations that the rankings will be worthless in the end.

3. False, Air/H2O people stand a decent chance if points is what they are after, just look at Top 10 in Enthusiast League. Now ofcourse, you can't ask a GT3 car to beat LMP1/2, but they are still fun to race and watch, agree?

4. You get points for your team with each hardware that they didn't use. So even a score that awarded you with 0,1 points is still worth at least 2 points for your team. Compete in empty categories and that will be 5.2points.

5. And most important, if you had fun running that benchmark it's more important than virtual points.

I was under the impression that to gain points on this site "Find some combination of hardware that you own (or have access to) that there are no results for, go benchmark it and post it" is how we gain significant points. But it seems that was either a lie or is just not how the site works. This should be made a lot more clear to other folks so they don't waste time on odd combinations of things like I did.

At least I know now... and more importantly, I know not waste time testing hardware for hwbot.org anymore.

Sorry you feel about it that way. Which combination of hardware that you use doesn't really matter. CPU benchmarks have a ranking for each CPU model, GPU benchmarks have a ranking for each GPU model. Like Genieben said, if we would award points for CPU/GPU combinations, earning points would just be a matter of grinding scores.

However, if you look at the CPU ranking for example, there's still not a lot of competition: http://hwbot.org/hardware/processor/k6_2_550mhz_plus/ . Even if you don't overclock it, you'll still get some points if you run SuperPi, PiFast & wPrime (1024m if you have the patient, you'll be the first with that CPU :)).

To check which benchmark give hardware points, go here: http://hwbot.org/benchmarks/

Kithylin, you've made a wrong generalization of the idea. There are obsolete tests like Sisoft Sandra once was - they are only for fun, not for points.

I was hoping I'd get points for unique submissions since I can't compete for top spots
So go get unique hardware! I've got a dual GPU RageXL and the only similar card is a "common" Rage Fury Maxx (which I also have). Results on it will be unique and I'll get my points when I bench it. Same goes for my Winchip CPU collection - results of only three models are presented on HWBot while I have more.
I could never hope to ever compete with any of the top spots in any category for any hardware because always the people that use phase/LN2 cooling take top spots and there's no chance for any normal people to ever compete with that.

Dead wrong. All my results so far are achieved without phase/LN2. Got beat my fresh K6-2+ 533MHz scores with your 550 and we get talking. :)

A hint - my superpi sucks, with common tweaks it should be easy to beat.

Kithylin, It is frustrating when you try your best and get .1 league points, (been there, but you can pick your races). As pointed out by Antinomy you are leaving a lot of points on the table by not benching all available categories for a particular piece of hardware, maybe not a lot of league points but by the hardware in your first post team points.

I’m in the Enthusiast League and benching for team points is my main way of contributing to the team.
