Is the ocp mod the same on the 5850??

I reckon so, Nick. If it is the same controller as above, then I'd wager that as a yes.

Is OCP needed?

I remember completing Vantage benches at 1400 core at 1.6v without any OCP kicking in...

I can't go past 1.35v without it black screening and no signal output

Is it a 5850 or a 5870?

Have both, but ladt one i tried was the 5850

with 5870 there is no need for OCP also you can adjust the vgpu up to 1.6 with software (ABX 1.51x)

Is there a need for a hard mod at all?

My ASUS DirectCU II HD 5850 also cuts out after 1.35 volts using the software. I've VID modded it, but I've not yet had the chance to give it a whirl since then.
