interest survey for a xeon / opteron / epyc competition

Recommended Posts

Only asking because those ES G34 chips are unlocked thus a lot of fun without CB/CBB like desktop parts, in other hand, they are very hard to find nowadays and would destroy the retail ones.

Anyway, count me in. :)

As benchnarks i am thinking of 3 stages ,but i am open for suggestions

Stage 1: CB20 or 7zip
Stage 2: x265 4k or gpupi for cpu 1B
Stage 3: Y-cruncher pi-25b or Pyprime

as rules :
Any cooling is allowed
Standard HWBOT screenshot rules apply
Verification screenshot contains 2x CPU-Z tab for the CPU's

Add a picture of your benching setup  ( no pictutere of a closed case )
windows server allowed
Mandatory usage of the Official competition wallpaper ( if anyone can make one )

@Leeghoofd
is ther a way to chek for remote desktop login?
i like to block remote desktop acces , only fisikal acces

Sounds interesting! I have a bunch of (older) server gear. List of benchmarks sounds ok for newer chips as well. Though what about older chips? CB20 and pi-25b could be a problem for older xeons and opterons

i think that as long you don't use slot 1 / slot 2 , socket 370 or socket A its possible to run all the proposed benchmarks.

In the database t'her are CBr20 scores from socket 604( xeon nocona ) and socket F ( opteron 2*** )

I'd just be worried that because there would be competition points "at stake", the competition would just end up being almost entirely pay to win, where you just have the more modern high end expensive stuff winning basically every stage, and not really showcasing some of the older platforms.

What about making it like some sort of team competition, but only require 1 sub per stage (so it doesn't exclude people on smaller teams, such that a lone-bencher could still potentially fill out all stages)? Stages could be set up to help force other older platforms, like say, having a stage where it's dual-socket with sub-stages being like DDR1/DDR2/DDR3/DDR4, or something. Or, maybe combine the DDRs, so it might be DDR1+2 for one stage, DDR3 for another, and then DDR4+5 for another, or something. Or, I guess it wouldn't even need to be a team-type comp, but could still just be an individual comp, but having separate stages for the older platforms gives someone who has one or two of those a chance against someone that might just have some dual Epyc system, since they can just sub in an equal amount of stages.

Or, make it kind of like the push the hardware style comp, where the various rounds are picking different "generations" of server/workstation hardware--perhaps separated by DDR version. That way, it's at least closer competition between people running say DDR2 platforms against other DDR2 platforms or DDR3 against DDR3 on more period-relevant benches (like older cinebenches or something for the older stuff, but cinebench2024 or ycruncher 10b/25b for newer stuff), since they're not going to have to compete with something 10-15 years newer.

Not sure exactly how to make it "fair", but just throwing out an idea to at least incentivize subbing older stuff, or at least have a chance of showing off some of the older stuff, rather than just all the top scores all being recent hardware.

I think t'he most of the modern high end servers in the database , ar from a company and remote login or one time fisikal access
Thad why i like to know if there is a way to detect and block remote access ( @Leeghoofd )
Splitting in different ram stages while make this competition a lot bigger than thought, But i let this decision to the moderators.

only way to ensure this is to use benchmate David,  to be honest I would feel very dissapointed  that a user would go that far to "win" a fun competition...

I would also go for Memory based stages, maybe DDR2 first round, DDR3 a next one... not sure how many users there will be but I think participation might just be a handful.

So what has been decided atm ?

Max 2 CPUs ?
No remote access allowed, Windows based OS only

Stage 1: CB20 or 7zip
Stage 2: x265 4k or gpupi for cpu 1B
Stage 3: Y-cruncher pi-25b = way to much memory required and very heavy laod on the motherboard./CPU
Pyprime = memory benchmark, not sure why one would want to run this on server platforms

Ok if you also go for memory based stages then so it while be.
The use of benchmate was on of the next rules t'had i want to suggest

I know that it while be a small amount of users
Stages ware a suggestion , i am open for changes special on stage 3

For now this is decided at the moment :

Max 2 cpu's
No remote acces
Windows based os only
All cooling allowed
2x cpu tabs of cpu'z if using two cpu's
Standart HWBOT rules apply

Stage 1: CB20 or 7zip
Stage 2: x265 4k or gpupi for cpu 1B

FB-dimm whil count as DDR2

As for stage 3 we can use one t'had is not chosen.

My preference is:
Stage 1: CB20 whit benchmate
Stage 2: x265 4K
Stage 3: gpupi for cpu 1B whit benchmate

start before or after computex?

everyone happy whit the proposed stages?
Stage 1: CB20 whit benchmate
Stage 2: x265 4K
Stage 3: gpupi for cpu 1B whit benchmate

and final rules?
Max 2 cpu's
No remote acces
Windows based os only
Only workstation / server hardware
System pic of open case / open air bench setup
All cooling allowed
2x cpu tabs of cpu'z if using two cpu's
Standart HWBOT rules apply

For me this is the final version.
The only thing to pick is a start time and end time.
And as suggested by @yee245 and @Leeghoofd it while be divided in memory based rounds

Round 1 DDR2/FB-dimm
Round 2 DDR3
Round 3 DDR4
Round 4 DDR5
