I use a Honey Pot - there are fields on the registration form hidden via CSS (most any non-text based browser supports CSS), but automated registration bots use command line tools that don't process CSS - they see and fill out the hidden fields all the time, so we give them error messages.

That's how this whole thing started. We figured our spam mechanism failed as Christian suddenly showed up.

I think there is a bigger problem now.

 

With the speed and frequency with which they are posting, these are clearly automated attacks - probably been manually configured to navigate the registration system, then set to auto-spam. Looks like the work of xrumers.

"Spam-O-Matic" fixed the spam bot issues on several forums I admin, not sure if there is a version for 3.7.1 but I highly recommend it for any VB installation.

Thats funny that some days after massman claimed "hwbot without bots" there are so much bots spaming everywhere on hwbot.
