Manufacturers usually don't get involved in overclocking for direct sales increase. OC is a small market. They do get involved to get power users to talk about their boards. Overclockers are 'opinion makers'

The special BIOS is so-called OCP unlocked. But as far as I know, it's just an increased OCP and not much different from stock bios.

Can you run at complete defaults and see what happens? If I run mine at default, it'll go to 35x turbo no issue. It's just when I start dialing in the settings myself that the ratio locks up in 16x.

Oh, I heard something similar from a team member. He thought he cleared the BIOS, but it didn't and he booted up at -ehem- high voltage. Yes, the pins are completely fine. I tried a Sandy Bridge to recover, but same issue :-/

Alright, posting this here because it's relevant to both EMEA and APAC qualifier. !! AfterBurner Extreme for 7970 Lightning !! Okay, as you all know, it's not that easy for MSI to just hand out fully unlocked versions of Afterburner to any user. Why? Warranty issues, obviously. You don't want a noob shooting 2V through their card and then RMA it 'because it stopped working'. For the MOA participants, who we assume are familiar with the badassness that is LN2, things are a little different. Usually, they know the risks of extreme overclocking and how to keep everything as safe as possible. So, for the people who want to use their 7970 Lightning in the MOA qualifiers MSI will be providing Afterburner Extreme software. There are a couple of rules, though. Please make sure you've read through all of them before applying!! THE RULES A. Application period: - EMEA Qualifier : From today to June 5 (Only open for EMEA region OCer) - APAC Qualifer: June 15-June 22 (Only open for APAC region OCer) B. Application procedure: - Overclocker must send the request to HWBOT (pieter@hwbot.org) and get the NDA contract form. - Overclocker must prepare the content including: --- signed NDA contract --- picture of the sticker of your R7970 Lightning (ie: proving you have a 7970 lightning) --- the link for their overclocking photo with LN2 (ie: proving you've done LN2 before) - The process for tool building takes at least 2 work days C. Application notes: - The Afterburner tool will expire when the competition is over (EMEA : 6/15, APAC: 7/20) - All the Afterburner extreme will shows the user’s name on the Afterburner interface. - The Afterburner Extreme user is prohibited to share or leak to other user. - User must understand there is risk for using the Afterburner Extreme and MSI will NOT provide warranty for overclocking damage - If there is found a user leak or share the Afterburner extreme, the user will be forever disqualified from MSI’s OC event in the future. Pretty long attendance list - almost CeBIT like! Usually the plan would be to rely on Trouffman. That kind of works out most of the time.

I think by now they are blocking mails from my email address containing the words "afterburner", "release to all" and "community needs it". It's not because I don't post in public "hey guys, asked msi again" that I'm not doing it.

I should be really sad about the 'state of the community' after reading all these posts here, but actually ... I'm quite happy. ... and the reason why I'm happy is because some folks actually put their nuts on the line and help out fellow overclockers with this kind of software. In fact, I know of at least 7 special afterburner versions that were used by someone other than the actual owner. Of course, I'm not going to tell who's helping out (not here, not to MSI), but that sharing spirit is pretty cool. In light of a 'fair' competition, I think not having the AB xtreme is one of the smaller issues that is affecting the level of fairness. It's not like it's impossible to compete without it ... it just requires some extra work. As for "afterburner extreme must be open for all" - I understand the community's point of view, but most certainly also MSI's point of view.

You're absolutely correct. The MOA qualifiers are a cooperation between MSI and HWBOT. Cooperation means that HWBOT has some say in the organisation, but not full and complete say in everything. The AB Extreme distribution is something that is not even related to the MOA competition; it's being handled by a completely different team within MSI. Like I said ... I have no control over the release of AfterBurner and I cannot magically change MSI's policies on it. They make custom versions and hand it to xtreme overclockers they trust with the software. I can recommend people, or give additional background info when they ask me "who is this", but I do not have any final say in anything. If you don't want the software from anyone else, then hardmod the card.
