  1. Which mod are you referring to ? Because all the GTX 480 mods were handed out by nVIDIA in a guide I agree for self-discovered mods though, it's a personal matter if the person wants to share the mod he found or not.
  2. All I know is that the E.S. ( and especially those that can't be matched, i5 670, i7 980X, QX9650 ) shouldn't be allowed in the rankings. What shall be done, splitting HWbot into 2 leagues, or just disallowing the E.S. is none of my business and obviously not my choice.
  3. If it's ok for you guys, then let's all go to Aristidis's place and bench with his system ( mainly his freaky i7 980X ) Is it necessary to have a league where the crazy E.S. should be allowed ? I think not having E.S. hardware in the rankings is an easier solution than creating another league with the E.S. hardware permitted. If you have to have the E.S. up, just create another category and give that league it's own ranking ( same point system, etc, just another db ). People with E.S. CPU's go to that league whether they like it or not. Points not being added to the member's team, or "split" the teams to pro/amateur leagues. Results from the pro category affect the pro category only, like I said before different leagues, separate database.
  4. Looks like you're not reading the lines. Things will never be absolutely fair, since luck can always be a factor and that alone makes it unfair. Being retail only, the X guy has a chance of getting lucky and picking up a "crazy chip" or the Y guy buying and selling 2-3 980X's getting a good chip at his 3rd take. The "hooked up" guys will always get to bin CPUs, but with retail only the difference between the two will be smaller, and it won't be impossible for a non-hooked up guy to get a great CPU, possibly even better than a binned chip of the A guy. It's not that hard to understand this post hopefully
  5. Are you sure that's in line with the reality ? Reality is, well.. Andre can buy lots of retails and bin. True and nobody has a problem with that, nobody ever said it was an issue ( it's a common secret that some people RMA their CPUs a few times to get a better chip because they're greedy or just can't afford buying a couple of 999$ CPUs ). The real deal breaker would be the "access to Intel or Asus/Gigabyte/eVGA" E.S. cabinet/gatherings, bench the CPUs, and get the best chip with you as you leave, thank you sir. With retail only allowed, everybody will have a chance to get the best chip ( for the time being of course, there's no best forever ), something that cannot be done with the E.S.
  6. First of all who said that it's about the money ( btw there's some money, no you won't become the new Bill Gates this way though ). [ on another thought, you can't ask people to spend their money getting several retails to prove that what you guys think is true, that there retails as good as the E.S.'s ] Money is a piece of sh1t. Some people value more significant things than money. Participating and SPENDING ( spending, not making ) money in a totally unfair league is different. While I don't give a flying f*ck about getting any money out of this, others might. Others might care about getting sponsored or some kind of support ( even if it's just an LN2 sponsor ). Nowadays manufacturers that sponsor people for OCing, take a look at the top of the bot and say let's pick him. So "by design" most of the OCers won't be able to even have the slightest chance of getting sponsored or just reaching the top 10 without going through several E.S. ( that come from a second hand, and of course who guarantees you that it's not X overclocker on ebay selling the bad E.S. he cleared through binning ) or hundreds of retails. Until we see a retail ( and no, don't think of CPU-z or screenshot altering c*ckheads ) benching Pi1m @ 6.7G you can all jump around claiming that it's all about luck and that there's no advantage for the ES's over the retail chips, but you do know deep inside that it's not true. You can't imagine how many people talk to me about this every day and how many would like to express their thoughts but they don't. Some people don't want to, some people don't have what it takes to voice their opinion, some people are afraid of things, and some don't care ( especially when it comes to having the advantage ). I ain't taking a piss, and definitely don't give a rat's a*s and always say what I have to say regardless of the consequences, I'm no manufacturer's b*tch and nobody's "slave". Have a nice day.
  7. Why don't you ask Andre who has binned retails too and see what his best chip managed... 362MHz @ Pi1M 409MHz @ Pi32M How exactly can somebody catch up with these ? Unless you want to insist on "the best retail pi chip hasn't been found yet" story. I hate to point the obvious, and to some it sounds like whining ( take it any way you want it ), but submitting scores obtained on non-purchased hardware benched at a manufacturer's location should also be prohibited ( or at least not ranked ). May I ask one paradoxical question ? How many people would keep benching on HWbot IF there was another similar oc ranking website but with E.S. restrictions ?
  8. That's far from the truth man. First of all, the top ES in the above post isn't hicookie's. Even if you ignore hicookie's chip ( you can ignore it, the rankings don't... ), check the rest... max Pi1M of E.S. = at least 5 chips at ~6.6GHz. max Pi1M of retails = 2 or 3 chips at ~6.45GHz. max pifast of E.S. = at least 5 chips at ~6.6GHz max pifast of retails = about 5 chips at 6.45GHz... One quick look at the rankings proves me right. If you want to get in the top 5-10 of a benchmark except 3D Mark2001SE, you need to have a good ES or have Bill Gates order 1000 980X retails for you to play with.
  9. AFAIK you can't use a 6 core CPU with only 4 cores enabled in order to submit the results for another CPU category. Must be moved to the 6x core category.
  10. So... still 250MHz behind. What about the rest... SuperPi ? PiFast ? Vantage ? 06 ? AquaMark ( surely HiCookie's can run it at 6.7G )...
  11. Best 980X E.S. vs best 980X retail today: Pi 1M ? 6843MHz vs 6481MHz = 362MHz higher Pi 32M ? 6687MHz vs 6278MHz = 409MHz higher 3D Mark05 ? 6705MHz vs 6458MHz = 247MHz higher 3D Mark06 ? 6452MHz vs 6257MHz = 195MHz higher 3D Mark Vantage ? 6203MHz vs 5906MHz = 297MHz higher AquaMark 3 ? 6485MHz or higher vs 6468MHz = few MHz higher, more pieces vs 1-2 retail pieces globally Still insisting that we'll see 980X retails surpassing the E.S. ? Chances of seeing 980X B2 retail stepping are 50-50.
  12. Well, it is a WR if you exclude the... slow Q3FE's & Q3QP's. But let's wait for the real retail WR's... sometime in 2015 we will see 1 retail 980X hitting 6690MHz PiFast...
  13. A joke Kal made about overclocking and the manufacturers behavior lately
  14. Sup everyone, As usual, the memory freak has another... RAM review for you today. It's about a relatively ( and very affordable in some places it seems ) affordable memory kit from Kingston, the HyperX DDR3-2000C9 ( part number... hold on....hmm... KHX2000C9AD3T1FK3/6GX ! woot I made it! ). Some quotes from the review: Grab a cup of coffee or your favorite drink and read the review now! :
  15. I'm quoting you m8, but the reply is for massman's previous post comparing Vince's competitions and the community competitions with the manufacturer's competitions. Well, here's the key. We spend money on both competitions, but in the community competitions you can buy whatever you want, and usually that's something that you keep and gain from purchasing it in the future. For example, if I had to buy a X58 motherboard for extreme overclocking and of course to participate in Vince's competition for example ( which has no brand restrictions ) I would buy the eVGA X58 Classified since that's the best motherboard in my opinion and I would like to have it to bench for HWbot in the future and in general. In the manufacturer's competitions that we've seen as of late we are forced to buy a specific motherboard of their desire. Will that product be of any benefit to me after the contest ends ( regardless if I win the contest or not ) ? Most of the times the answer is no. So why should I spend the money to buy the Xpower in example and money on LN2 and "work hours" for a slim chance to win the 1st prize ( which usually is money, and to be precise just a little bit over what you're required to spend for the competition ) ? You know, the majority of the overclockers out there are not seighs, millionaires, and pimps. They are usually poor or just "economically ok" people who can afford to spend a few bucks on hardware/ln2 each month. So if they're going to spend some money they'd rather spend them on something they'll use and benefit from everyday, not just for 1 day, a single competition. Right on mate, sadly there are far less people with principal and ethics nowadays. And also right on about the way the newcomers and forthcoming ( possibly, if they don't get discouraged & disgusted by the mess we go through lately ) feel when they read these things. Not gonna happen ( I can fix that, give it to me and I'll leak it )
  16. Fair competition = If you want Xpower only move the date so everybody can get one and have a few days to pretest it and insulate it properly. Limit the GPU clocks to lower than cold slow & OCP frequencies so everybody can have a go. There it goes. People will buy the Xpower. People will think they have more chances to win. Nobody will have to share the cold slow mod.
  17. Sure it's just me. Can I win ? Let's see... Let's assume that I managed to get ahold of a decent 980X that is capable of running 3D Mark Vantage at 6GHz and SuperPi 32M at 6.3GHz. Let's also assume that everybody else sucks at tweaking SPi32m and I'm the Buddha of tweaking, so I manage to get a good position ( 2nd, 3rd, 4th ) [ unless you think that there's a chance of a guy with a 6.3GHz CPU beating a 6.55GHz CPU ]. Vantage is pretty much a hit & run benchmark, and the few things that can have a little effect on the score are common knowledge between the overclockers ( I'll be surprised if the good benchers don't know these ). So... I have a CPU disadvantage ( let's ignore the fact that it doesn't really matter in a single socket & single GPU configuration ) and also a VGA disadvantage ( 1100 - 1150MHz GPU vs 1200+ GPU ). Now, honestly do you think I can win ? The point is that you don't get the point. I really don't care about winning a contest and its effin prizes. They can have them, I really don't give a sh*t. I also don't give a rats as* if Andre ( nothing personal dude ) or Jen Hsun or MSI's owner wins the competition. But I can't become a hypocrite and pretend that I understand that this competition is fair. Fact is I wouldn't take part in this competition no matter what, even if I could win without breaking a sweat. So if you're looking for personal motives & reasoning, there are none to be found. p.s. I took part in GOOC 2009, 3D Mark2001SE, it was nice and unlimited on all ends, and despite the fact that I could choose to have a go at the Multi-GPU stage where Hipro5 wasn't competing, I went after the single-GPU stage for the sake of competition, fun and showing & learning stuff. And I've even decided back then to let Hipro5 go even if I ended up on top Having doubts ? Ask him if I gave him a hint to catch up with me after finding something interesting
  18. Yeah, it's 3 A common secret shared between 3 friends. Yeah, since it's not something we can figure out ( it's a combination of software & hardware mod ) we'll just hire a hot blonde chick to blow our way to the mod. Or... maybe we should all hook up with somebody in a manufacturer to obtain things that others can't. Stage 1 is taken away from the very beginning, that I can guarantee you. The second stage is a more plausible competition, but we all know that the big guns with the cold slow fix also happen to be lucky to have crazy clocking CPUs that make things pretty easy to hit a top 5 spot in the 32M stage too. Can't wait to see the outcome of this contest ( yeah yeah ) I refuse and boycott unhealthy competitions, so that is correct, I didn't take part in a contest held on HWbot as of yet. Some people feel the desire and feel like they always have to be the winners, so yes some will not participate in a contest they feel they won't win. Other people just don't participate in contests that seem to be or just are unfair and flawed. Sadly they FAILED once again, since the requirement of this contest, the motherboard isn't available in most places on this planet and might not be available even after the competition ends. Also the fact that: 1.Some ( non-sponsored ) people can get the board earlier than the rest is an unfair factor, as you need time to learn the motherboard and its pecularities 2.A lot (?) of people already have or will get a sample from MSI shortly ( and it might as well be a "cherrypicked" sample too ) Before I get misunderstood, it's not about who's the receiver of the "private" goods and mods from the manufacturers, I couldn't care less about the person who's taking that advantage. I'm against that action from the manufacturer ( giving something that really sets an overclocker apart from the rest ).
  19. When a manufacturer gives a special BIOS to only 1 person, and that BIOS gives him an unbeatable advantage, this is definitely not fair. If you figured the mod out yourself good for you, you can keep it to yourself or share it with the community. But when a manufacturer gives a big advantage to only 1 person and organizes a competition that that 1 person will win no matter what because of that private modification is a BIG FAIL and a discriminating action against the oc community.
