My thoughts about future Old School is Best School competition
TASOS replied to max1024's topic in HWBOT Competitions
ok I will share my thoughts too , about Old School Competitions. I will keep things as simple as possible. 1)We must try to widden the base of active users on these competitions and not the opposite. Aiming for very specific and less common hardware , is not the way to do this. 2)We must try and keep stages and rules simple. Too many restrictions are killing the fun factor. 3)We must try to use hardware meant for regular users and not business. Hardware meant for overclocking. 4)We must try and keep cost low. I see people making statements about high amount of money being spent for rare hardware and cooling options. ok. That's a personal choice , for someone who wants to achieve the best , but ... does it have to be that way ? We can have speed caps ... if you like. Instead of someone buying a rare XYZ Slot-1 1GHZ cpu , he could overclock his 700 to a Ghz (random example). 5)You wanna see different hardware in these competitions and not the same all the time ? ... it can be done. Example Let's organize a specific stage based on motherboard gen. This month it's slot-1 2D benches We could have all cpu gens on it. Covington , Mendocino , Clamath , Dechutes , Katmai , Coppermine I believe we can find a solution to everything. There are numerous possible combinations of common hardware. We can work out a good formula. -
Please fix the links (for the wallpaper) inside the competition pages.

Hello I bet eternity can wait. You will use them sooner or later in an Old School Cup

Congrats !!! For an outstanding result. -
At first sight , i was surprised seeing MaxxMem , at Team Cup (after all those chat's about buggs and flies of this benchmark) But after looking closer ... what a relief It was Maxmem this time. Phewww .- P.S. Dont you dare and tell me , i've got a bad sense of black humor

Congrats !!! The VGA clocks are very very good. But your cpu clocks (mainly) are kind of low. If you could have a 6.4Ghz cpu , your run would have been @127k -
Superpi 1M efficiency down the drain on singlecore
TASOS replied to TAGG's topic in Benchmark software
What i could think of , is Memory sub-timings (not the primary ones) ... and bios version. -
Not true. G3258 cpu's have IMC's just like every other cpu's have. Some will be good , some will be average and some will be excellent. One random cpu i had , went all the way up to 3600 on mem (aircooled). Is (each) of your hardware validated to run at those specs ? Is your board tested to be able to run high mem speed (with any other cpu or ram) ? Have you ever run high mem speed , on an other board , with any of these G3258's ? You have a lot to test. Start with your memory settings on a single module at first. Havent told us anything about memory training also.

The board had a typical behaviour of VIA chipset , easily loosing stability after the 110fsb mark. Of cource it was more stable when not using the +33 ram speed option. But what's the point of using it then ? ... better go irongate. As for overclocking aspect , i wouldnt say that i noticed an improvement after modding it to a K7V-T Maybe it was a bit better ... but it could also be a placebo effect. When overclocking through bios , the board had a (bug or feature) of NOT booting straight away ... but after a couple of reset's. That was happening only the first time i changed an fsb value. Next boot-up's after the first , were fine. Not the same behaviour when going jumper & dip-switch way. When the board was a normal K7V (with all bios tested) it could boot a Tbird and overclock it , up to 800 Mhz Either it was fsb overclocking or multi overclocking. After the 800 barrier it was a no go. After i did the hardware modification , i initially left the original bios of K7V on it , to see how it reacts. Well , it raised the Tbird speed barrier up to 880Mhz. Meaning that an original Tbird 900 still couldnt boot all the way. It could open the screen and proceed with the boot sequence up to FF indication on the poster , but after that i was left with a black screen and dead cursor. I then flashed it to K7V-T ... and got a green light. I will keep on testing it , but i need to find some good 150+ CL2 sdram chips

Old School is Best School Season 3 Round 5
TASOS replied to Strunkenbold's topic in HWBOT Competitions
Oups That's me This is one of my results. I was unstable and couldnt take the screenshot. i had instant freezes ... so i took a photo. The score is valid ... and it's obvious that the system is mine (no loan photo). If somebody complains about this score , you can do what you consider best. It's not a big deal for me , because i have an other score a few ms slower. TASOS`s SuperPi - 1M score: 1min 57sec 830ms with a Athlon 900 (Thunderbird, Slot A) Sorry for the extra moderating work. -

Congrats Kotori-san. Great score !!! -
My good friend hipro5 (which i thank ,very-very much) modded the board to become a K7V-T by adding the capasitors on the back side and by adding the resistor in the front side , (plus moving one of the existing ones). After that , i flashed the board to become a K7V-T It's the exact mod , described here Aufpoliert: Vom Asus K7V zum K7V-T(uning) No other mods done on this board. I will upload pics later.
