Been kicking around an idea in my head

 

Are there any old (CHEAP is important) mobos that have 8+ SATA ports? Doesn't matter if they're spread across multiple controllers or only SATA 1.5Gb/S, being able to hook up a load of drives is the most important thing

If you need eight SATA ports, what's the matter with PCI/PCI-E SATA controllers?

Might end up cheaper to find than an obscure old board.

How old, and how cheap? What platform?

I'm finding sata cards disproportionately expensive Cheapest 4-port PCI card I can find on Ebay UK is £12

 

Any age, any platform. Sata ports and price is the most important thing

I have my old DFI SLI-DR here, that has 8 and it's a good starting point. Hoping to find a couple of boards with a more consistent low price

 

 

At the mo, i'm even vaguely looking at SAS cards and 1-to-4-way cables.

I was gonna say, almost all the Gig 790 boards have 8.

Thats for the suggestion They're still quite expensive in the UK,but i'll keep an eye out on Ebay

Take a look on LSI 2008/IBM M1015 card (it's the same card, just branded). Can be flashed in HBA mode and used for 8*SATA ports. Costs more but gives more too.

 

Favoured by DIY NAS builders.

My interest in that solution depends 100% on Ebay bids
