M.Beier Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 I can only agree with you... why no normal limitations for graphics card? for example HD 7770/7850/7870...and CPU frequency? this is as ever only "money" and "luck" competition...no chance (close to zero) to beat richer european overclockers when most of overclockers can afford maybe only one piece of some Ivy and unlikely R7970 Lightning and that's all...while somebody can buy for ex. ten pieces of Ivy for biding...why?!!...you know what? it sucks... Or agreement with store... Quote
I.M.O.G. Posted April 2, 2012 Posted April 2, 2012 (edited) Nice competition MSI. Should bring out some of the best of the best... Kind of interesting also with the timing, many people have sold off their high-clocking 2600K already to prepare for Ivy Bridge. As for costs for hardware, there will also be costs involved with travel - if you can't afford the hardware, you could also have a hard time doing the travel - tipping the maids, hotel, transportation, etc. Expenses add up... It sounds like winners get a plane ticket to Taiwan, not an all expense paid trip. Maybe past attendees can lend insight on travel expenses? I hope more of the community responds positively and supports MSI for holding cool competitions. In the end, its all just for fun... It's luck of the draw once you get to the competition if you end up with good hardware or dud hardware, and if the session goes well for you or if you blow out 5 seconds in. You have to be a solid overclocker to have a chance at a live competition but its equal parts, or more even, luck. Having access to and experience with expensive high end hardware is likely a big plus... Hard to cater to average or less experienced in a competition with stakes this large. If you can't afford the hardware, talk to your teams - maybe you can borrow something for the competition, and submit by "not participating in hwbot rankings"! Edited April 2, 2012 by I.M.O.G. Quote
Hondacity Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 please let us use ivy bridge its so much more fun please please please. please x 1x10exp1000000 Quote
gnidaol Posted April 3, 2012 Posted April 3, 2012 It's cool that we won't have Ivys, only north america would receive any retail in time to compete. but it is another year that americas will qualify using a different rig, I really hope that can change in the future.. Quote

In the past 4 years, the 'prize' included: travel expenses + hotel + lunch/dinner arrangements. So, technically, you could have a free trip. But if you want to go out or visit another place in Taipei that's on your own expense of course. IIRC, Ivy Bridge was actually supposed to launch in the beginning of April. Intel postponed it, though, so ... you really should be blaming Intel for this one Quote
thebanik Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 5.96 SB, check5.63 SB-E, check $230 MSI s1155 motherboard, negative. $389 MSI s2011 motherboard, negative. (and out of stock) $600 MSI R7970 Lightning, negative. (and out of stock) $1,200 in hardware not counting LN2, just to participate, they could have at least limited it to one platform. Good luck gents. Hey Gunny, You of all people should not complain, this is not the first time that MSI or Gigabyte have these rules. The competition is to find the best overclocker in the world, you cannot be the best if you cannot afford the top hardware. Ofcourse with SB its now even more difficult to beat some1 who has a CPU like yours but it has always been like this. By the way, may I recommend to you, selling the 5.96 SB chip??? You will mostly be able to afford all the other stuff in your list, Quote
Blue Storm Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 The competition is to find the best overclocker in the world, you cannot be the best if you cannot afford the top hardware. What?! So you want to say that if you have more money you are better overclocker? sorry, but it's total BS...many overclockers have their results with borrowed hardware from manufacturers, but can't afford hardware like 3770K + R7970 Lightning...so if this overclocker did some very good results (could be some WRs), but don't have money for expensive hardware, he isn't good? BS! Quote
Massman Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 MSI wants to associate the brand name "Master Overclocking Arena" with high-end extreme overclocking. That's why the qualification requirements are so high-end too. Quote
Hondacity Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 this will involve a little teamwork on resources for some. while others have sponsors. its scary lol the 1800mhz trick will be fun Quote
gnidaol Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 When will the official wallpaper be published? Quote
rbuass Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 (edited) I hope Ivy Bridge not allowed to Americas... In South America almost sure will be impossible to get one before 1 month after launched. If its allowed, no way to see any South American guy there. Thats impossible to compete against Ivy ATM....even you get excelent GPU clocks Edited April 5, 2012 by rbuass Quote
I.M.O.G. Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 It already said not allowed in the first post for americas, I don't understand what all the Ivy discussion is about. Quote
Perica_barii Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 UPDATE BY HWBOT STAFF The Practical Stuff - Get Lost You Sandbagger! We all know how online competitions usually work, so for the MOA 2012 we will implement an elemination cut to force those annoying sandbaggers to play their cards a little earlier in the game. The elimination will take place after 75% of the competition (we'll provide exact date, time, timezone) and will only allow the 15 best overall ranked to continue submitting. If you don't make the top-15 cut, you will no longer be allowed to submit in the rest of the competition. It would be great if MSI give some rewards to all top 15, cause it is too expensive to participate otherwise. They cut their expense by not making continental competition, so they might spend some money on rewards... Quote

El Gappo Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Whats the deal with EU qualifiers this time, online or like last time where they pick and choose what they want to do? Quote
ME4ME Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 tbh, it's a pitty that there's no more live event for each continent but at least EVERYONE can now participate. Some people should give MSI some credit for that, after years of complaining Quote
OBR Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 tbh, it's a pitty that there's no more live event for each continent but .... Low-cost annual MOA ...there is a crisis, they must save money Quote
ME4ME Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I know, im fine with it. Fully understand their decision. Just wanted to point out that is even has it's advantages Quote
Mean Machine Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Without being involved in the competition itself, I believe it is down to giving everyone a chance this time rather than anything else. Quote
Neuromancer Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Master of 3d11 contest sweet dont think my AIWHD will stand a chance though *sigh Whoever places 1st in 3D 11 unless they fail to complete the other two tests should win this easily. Very little point differnces in the other two tests and massive deficits for not getting first in the3d11. Not sure how I understand that weight ratio to work. I understand the percentages are similar but the points arent. 2nd place 3d11 is worth more than 1st place in other two tests combined! Quote
