Rev3 Up and Running - Complaints, Ideas, Ramblings, Comments ... but no bugs

As posted a handful of times already: there are a couple of bugs that affect the hardware boint rankings, plus the complaints are all over the place. Some people think it's all about the money now, and some think $2000 rigs have no future here... it's obvious there are alot of misunderstandings - both of these statements can't be right!

Actually both statements can be right as you have to understand not everyone is viewing the new emerging situation from one person/hwbot folks perspective but that of their own. That's why throughout all 3 revisions of hwbot, there have been folks pro-change and folks against the changes.

Definitions of effort and amount of money will differ for everyone participating in hwbot. For folks use to LN2/DI and volt modding they'll see that they put alot of effort, time and money to achieve their results. For folks on air/water who push their systems to the limits of their system cooling limitations, find tweaks and test their systems will see that they also put in alot of effort, time and money. It's all relative.

Now the new rev3 has rubbed both kinds of folks the wrong way.

1. Folks on LN2/DI and with more money or saved the asses off for multi-gpu setups in hopes of achieving higher scores now in rev3 see that effort (saving money) and benching in multi-gpu configs are not being rewarding enough relative to older gen hardware which is more popular.

2. Folks on air/water in some categories are only getting minor points 0.1 for their efforts as all the points are now sourced in popular hardware categories which have folks on DI/LN2 or volt modding occupying the >0.1 pt rewarding spots. These folks for reasons financially or otherwise can't afford to modify/volt mod and kill their hardware to compete in the more popular hardware categories.

So as you see both statements can be correct as it's all relative

Why everywhere only 0.1? Why not going 1.5 - 1.2 - 0.9 - 0.6 - 0.1

It has been designed for 1024x768. Which specific page is giving you problems?

1. The site is to wide, so i need to roll it left-right which is quite annoying.

2. Many things cover overclockers league a bit or other items in right sidebar. For example: hwbot january oc challage picture, table in 'benchmarks' and so on.

3. Team names in 'members rankings' are cut, etc.

Good job for this bug correction.

I think less people will complain about the 0.1pts problem (which still here).

But I think a 60% of rewarded scores in little categories (with decrease by the number of submissions) is a solution to the matter of a lot of people.

I have to acknowledge that it takes courage to make such a drastic change. As it is, and at first contact, I personally preffered much more the old version (rev.2) and would opt for smaller changes addressing each issue at a time: number of GPU/CPU, unpopular/popular hardware, achievements changes, etc...

As people say: If it ain´t broke don´t fix it. Or as we say in Brazil about soccer teams: ("Nao se mexe em time que está ganhando") something like: "You do not change if the team is winning". (after all nobody can ever know for sure all the reasons why this is happening... ). Sometimes changes are needed but the consequences are hard to foresee.

Please remember that to have winners and 1st places we need loosers and 2nd places. Since it is all relative depending on how high you set the bar there will be more or less people willing to take part. There is no way to tell what is going to happen in the long run but please understand that it is normal for people to feel bad if they were playing with one set of rules and it suffers a big change - specially with backwards effects reducing (sometimes very hard earned) points.

But as you say there are bugs to be fixed and to be more practical I will add some numbers to one bug I belive has already been spotted and really left me with a strange feeling. For me it is a very serious one based on the fact that it can change significantly the scores of many people who have less points - lets say less than 300 - and these are the vast majority of the people at Hwbot and the ones that allow the first ones to have significance in their ranking.

- results for cpuz with 5 participants (Cyrix M-II 300)

1st 1.8 points

2nd 0.3 points

3rd 0.2 points

4th 0.1 points

5th 0.1 points

More than 50% received more than 0.1. The 1st received 6 times more than 2nd (1.8 to 0.3) and this looks strange

- results for cpuz with 31 participants (Pentium 3 celeron 900)

but the drop from the 10th to the 11th is from 0.7 to 0.1 - 7x, also strange

Quickly looking around I found this to be consistent. For very few results we are close to 50% awarded and there is too much difference

between 1st and 2nd (totaly out of proportion with the difference between 2nd to 3rd). For more results the difference between 1st

and 2nd looks "normal" but the difference between the last score with more than 0.1 and the first 0.1 score is now out

of expected proportion. I may have looked at a few bugged results but it does not seem so.

Anyway this was a huge undertaking and I hope that with small changes from now on you can make rev.3 as fun to play or better than rev.2. Have a nice 2010

In my opinion - yes. But it's not only at 5er ranking. I think the points should be more balanced. Going down slowly and not directly to 0,1

I respect the admins for working hard on rev 3 but you can't just say, we thought about this and no one used the test server so we're not changing it, to bad for you

people here are giving good ideas on how to improve rev 3 and you just sit and say, it's fine, learn to bench

sorry for the double post but what I still think is a problem is how theres a huge difference in points between something and 0.1

for example 9600 gt 1GB in 3d vantage
