How to bin

 

Binning Sandy Bridge is extremely easy.

 

- use HS fan with easy mounting

- set Vcore to 1.55V

- disable EIST, C1E and C-States

- disable HT and 2 cores (to not make it overheat with crappy HSF)

- increase multiplier

 

You just need to see the windows OS options, not actually boot into windows. If your CPU can show the different OS options, stability will just be function of Vcore and temperature. If it doesn't show the OS options, you will never get it stable anyways, so you might as well ditch the CPU.

 

Usually, it takes about 5 minutes to see if the CPU is good or not.

 

With some CPUs, you do have the issue that some multiplier is better than the other for stability. For instance, my current CPU can boot at 51x MAX (~ 5145MHz). When trying to run near this max speed, I have to use 49x instead of 50x multiplier because it's a lot more stable.

 

But, that's something you don't need to test. With BCLK adjustments, you'll never get 5200MHz going or so. Multiplier binning is the best way.

I was invited to day by the Belgian high-end PC shop TONES (http://www.tones.be) to play with Sandy Bridge at the Intel launch party. Together with other [M]-boys (Leeghoofd, Pt1t, Gamer, Teemto and Piotke) we tested 5 retail chips. Here's what we found out:

 

Batch: L039B470

 

# 0028: 4900 MHz

# 0030: 5200 MHz

# 0298: 5250 MHz

# 4672: 5415 MHz (air)

# 4673: 5375 MHz

 

Those CPUs had two different types of S/N. The 467x start with 2V036, the others start with 35038.

 

I also tested one 2500K ES:

 

Batch: L035B183

 

# 1377: 5200 MHz

 

And one 2600K ES:

 

Batch: L035B191

 

# 0771: 5288 MHz

For your information, you can also see the # of the CPU if you look at the sticker on the box. The last 4 digits of the S/N are the same as the ones on the black sticker on your CPU.

Fueling the hope that random numbers will enlighten us on the overclocking capabilities. Also, providing justification for spending money on yet-another CPU by the 'it should be good'-argument.

I guess it is like stamp collection I never saw the point of that but many people love it = and like stamp collecting it does no harm. :)

Registered just to say I have an i7-2600K...

I'm quite certain it's a dud. It runs incredibly warm (Stock settings: It idles at ~42C while Speedstepped down to 1.6Ghz @ 1v and tops out at 75C under load when turbo'd to 3.5Ghz) and I cannot get it to OC past 4500Mhz. If I set the Vcore any higher than 1.37v the system fails to boot.

 

I'm using an Asus P8P67 PRO with the latest 1053 BIOS with the PLL Overvoltage fix (enabled).

 

I'm heading back to the store today to exchange it hopefully.

I have a couple of L040B354 in my friend in Detroit. He did some quick stability testing on the 1st and got 4500 Mhz @ 1.235v. Will test more tonight and tomorrow. Will update my post as soon as I have more results to share.

3x 5000

 

One of them wanted to boot 51x100 but couldn't fully manage it

 

out of thoose 3x5000 with pll overvoltage

 

1x 5537 MHZ 32m

1x 5555 MHZ 32m

1x 5588 MHZ 32m

Then we have a newer batch now coming which already did multiple 56x100 with pll overvoltage on water and air CPUz
