General hardware discussion

  1. Checking the best scores today, I noticed the focus of the league changed. Much more for 2D.... and looks for the most important benchmark is XTU.... the most rewarded and benched. That's different from my focus... regardless I like 2D benchmarks, I still consider 3D hardest and much more difficult, more technical, and according to my point of view, should be more valued. Anyway, it does not matter to me ..... because the importance I gave before to Worldwinde Overclocking League, was much higher than now. At the moment I bench only for me and for fun... , not caring about rankings and competitions. The overclocking for me now, is to try to beat records or get great…

Been kicking around an idea in my head Are there any old (CHEAP is important) mobos that have 8+ SATA ports? Doesn't matter if they're spread across multiple controllers or only SATA 1.5Gb/S, being able to hook up a load of drives is the most important thing Thanks! K

Hello, I have a big problem and That battery starts my laptop: http://www.akkus-laptop.com/dell-vostro-1510-akku.html , And the laptop (only 7 months old by the way) you can not start! Now my question is, HAS something to do with the charging cable (there still burns the green light, Which means clustering something like that comes from the power repays Seckdose) or something on the laptop, or is it broken?

Some five years ago my friend Peter give my this MSI 6340 micro ATX mobo with the Duron 750 CPU. It allegedly worked, but very, very unstable. However I got intersed, because I see mainboard back from 2001 for Socket 462 processors - Duron, Athlon - that got interestingly designed Vcore regulator and mainly a polymer Fujistcu caps. The yellow ones are polymers - regardless that they have the top perforations like elektrolyte caps: Also as they say - everything small is nice. And this board is really small, almost like just fit tomy hand: The fact that the mainboard is unstable is understandable. It is only enough to look, what caps are on it - many bad c…

On the back side of the motherboard, behind the area of the socket, could be applied 3 tantalum capacitors to stabilize the voltage of the CPU during high load situations, what capacity do you recommend ?

Having fixed it once already I have now managed to kill it once again, this time i was slotting it into the case and caught two of the SMD's on the back and knocked them off. Anyone know what they are as I can't seem to find them anywhere in my case, they seem to have vanished, so I will just order some from rs or farnell. http://www.the-grand-line.com/hwbot/20130924_233900.jpg Thank in advance all

Mouse and keyboard lag is quite a issue for fast first person shooter games. They tend to get so fast, that my poor PC cannot compete with most, yet still I wonder, if there are tools how to measure the input lag of devices like mouse and keyboard. For a old-school machine, I use PS/2 ports for both, yet the MX510 Logitech mouse is by original a USB device, connected only by the adapter to PS/2. That make one wonder, if the adapter could not contribute some lag on it's own... (and I think the answer is a definitive yes, it have to) So that is why I trying to push the PS/2 ports speed up: ...but w/o being able to measure how things get faster, I have no id…

Hi Guys! Since it has a bit of a link with overclocking and overclocking hardware i post this here ... Mods, feel free to move it to Off-topic if you judge that it is more appropriate. Some of you might have seen in on FB, but why not re-sharing it here: This is still quite experimental and we will be soon back in Taiwan for some more overclocking timelapse fun. If you like it, feel free to share and give feedback. Music can be downloaded here (Big thanks to DJ FireBlack for the custom track) : http://www.overclocking-tv.com/content/video/18838/venomlapse-video-the-overclocking-time-lapse-experiment/ Enjoy!

  16. I bought an Amstron replacement battery for my Asus Eee PC 4G and it takes three days to charge. Is this typical of new laptop batteries, such as http://www.caccu.nl/asus-eee-pc-4g-batterij.html ? Do off-brand batteries not work well with Dells? What should I do?

Hi, i have a question about Ram speeds. I downloaded Intel Extreme Tuning Utility today and i saw that my ram speed was at 1333MHz by default. I have Kingston DDR3 HyperX Beast 16GB 2400MHz. Should it not be at 2400MHz by default?

Hey guys, I recently got me some HD 7970's from XFX. Last night I tried to overclock with them and noticed that everytime I raise the clocks, the system hangs as soon as it starts a benchmark, so I decided today to pick one card out and see what it's capable of. Here's what I figured out: Stock clocks are 925/1375, I just flashed a custom bios with 1050/1500 clocks(not GHz bios). At these clocks it still runs fine, but when I up the core to 1060MHz for example I already got enormous artifacts, even though it's only 10MHz more. I modded the bios again with 1075/1500 clocks and it ran fine... What is going on here? Why can't I set a normal overclock without …

Hey, all. I started building PCs about 20 years ago, but haven't done one in quite a while (last build was a Pentium 4). I've put together a great rig for the purposes of OCing and I want to start running some benchmarks. Forgive me if I'm asking stupid questions (or if they're answered elsewhere - my searches produced no results). The first test I attempted was the 3DMark Fire Strike Extreme. After reading the validation regulations (http://hwbot.org/news/9664_application_58_rules/), I realized I don't even know where to begin. Are each one of those tests that I run individually and then submit each result? Or, is there a way to have 3DMark do all o…

  24. I flashed the card with a Coldslow BIOS and benched the card without problems. I flashed the original back (already back to stock volts, stock cooler) and got a flickering red screen. After a bit, I got what you see in the picture. I have no idea what went wrong and i've never seen a problem like this, despite all the times i've flashed a GPU BIOS. Any and all advice & fixes welcome. It's from a Gigabyte non-ref GTX470.
