General hardware discussion

  1. Started by Wiggles,

I bought a Intel D5400XS a few days ago knowing it was broken for cheap trying to fix it. the board has no bent pins that are interfering with others, has working processors(2x Xeon X5460), 4 FBDimm RAM modules that work, EVGA 1200W PSU, and a GTX 980. It posts from a cold startup with a CLR CMOS to the memory check 28->29. As soon as it tries to check the PCI check the POST Led displays 01, and the CPU Overheat light comes on for CPU1 but only dimly. I tried swapping processors, different ram, different slots for the GPU(even a 9800GTX just incase the 980 was incompatible or broken), CLR CMOS, and visual inspection of the VRM and socket. I believe t…

Wow In a discussion related to technology and market trends for the data center, Liviu Valsan (computing engineer at CERN) showcased slides which detailed AMD’s upcoming Opteron processors that feature their x86 Zen core architecture. The session not only provided details on AMD’s next generation processors but also mentioned Intel’s Broadwell-EP chips along with enterprise aimed storage and memory solutions. https://cds.cern.ch/record/2128536?ln=ja http://wccftech.com/amd-zen-opteron-processor-32-core/

  3. Today I received a picture of a slightly bent pin on an ASUS Rampage IV Black Edition. This is the picture. In the upper right corner you can see an area where a few pins seem to be a little off their normal position. One pin however is bent slightly more than the other ones. Its in the 9th line from the top, 10th pin from the right. I just want to know what this pin is for and therefor searched some Intel-docs. I had a look in this pdf (figure 3-4., page 19). Note: If I'm not mistaken the pin is located in the lower left area and not in the upper right. When I mark the pin like this then it should be land V9. But according to this datasheet there is …

  7. Intel has identified an issue that potentially affects the 6th Gen Intel® Coreâ„¢ family of products. This issue only occurs under certain complex workload conditions, like those that may be encountered when running applications like Prime95. In those cases, the processor may hang or cause unpredictable system behavior. Intel has identified and released a fix and is working with external business partners to get the fix deployed through BIOS. http://arstechnica.co.uk/gadgets/2016/01/intel-skylake-bug-causes-pcs-to-freeze-during-complex-workloads/ https://communities.intel.com/mobile/mobile-access.jspa#jive-content?content=%2Fapi%2Fcore%2Fv3%2Fcontents%2F524…

  8. The 6800GTO is the OEM version of a 6800GT. As far as I know, it ONLY exists as a "Dell R7240." Standard 6800GT die and PCB, a single-slot cooler and a dual-slot IO plate like the Ultra. This should probably be combined with the 6800GT. There is no way to tell them apart. GPU-Z calls them both "6800 series"

Hello Guys! I'm Andrea, from Italy. I'm a student of Scienze Informatiche here in Bologna, i've got some questions for you! This summer I built my first computer game , these are the specs: -Intel i5 4690K; -MSI z97 gaming 7; -Galax gtx 980 HOF; -2 x 4gb Corsair Dominator Platinum kit (2133hz); -Corsair H110 liquid cooled; -Corsair RM850 CP; -Case Corsair Obsidian 750D; -SSD Samsung 850 Pro 500gb; -OS Windows 10 Pro. For now I have not yet experimented overclocking, and my current score in the benchmark is: 768. But here my question for you: I have only seen after the purchase, the processor supports a maximum of 1.5 volts. The Rams , to turn 2133hz , …

My Asus Z97-Pro (WiFi ac) have bios v2303: So I load the new bios (all the more recent bioses anyway) on USA flash: I picked up the latest one (v2702) and tried... ...to upload it, then I get "not a proper BIOS" message: NONE of the bioses I tested (v2401, v2501, v2601 and v2702) worked. All I download directly from Asus site: http://www.asus.com/cz/Motherboards/Z97PROWiFi_ac/HelpDesk_Download/ ...so could SOMEBODY tell me, what is going on?! Next thing - let's try the mainboard function of USB BIOS Flashback - I put into the proper port (page 2-14 "bottom port supports USB BIOS Flashback") USB drive with file in the root di…

Just got my DFI nf4 Ultra D motherboard and a fast optical control showed that its missing 2 components that Im fairly sure should be there as it looks like they have been riped off the card. I wonder if anyone with a whole card can check what ratings on the components so I can re add them before testing the card. The two components missing are as follows, first the caps in the red circle and then what I would guess is a small resistor in the green circle.

That's the actual Overclocking scenary... It has been for a long time 2D....2D....2D....2D... http://prntscr.com/97qbru XTU is the king of the Hill and no more space to 3D... Wprime, Cinebench, etc.... today has much more power than 3D. No matter if is related to GTX 980Ti, or simply cards... missing "3D" power in the league. I have posted the same few days ago... I thank the league for innovation, considering that there was a great evolution and many improvements. But while there is no incentive to 3D, or even the separation of 2D and 3D, all will remain the same. Eventually becomes boring for those who focus on 3D benchmarks, which I consider much more t…

Now, I begin with a disclaimer. This post isn't strictly about overclocking. That being said, I do need some help with my laptop's speed. The specs are as follows: Intel Core i5-5200 CPU @2.20 GHz 12 GB DDR3L Hynix RAM @1600Mhz 1 TB HDD @5400rpm Windows 8.1 x64. Find a more detailed write-up of its features here: http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetPDF.aspx/c04554237.pdf Anywho, on to more pressing matters. 1) With fast boot, the laptop boots to the log in screen in just under 15 seconds. However, without that option enabled, it takes more than two minutes just to get to the log in screen, and in both instances, it's another 2-3 minutes after logging in befo…

  14. http://www.servethehome.com/intel-xeon-e5-2670-v1-prices-still-plummeting/ You can pick one up right now on Ebay for around $130.00, just in the last 10 days prices have dropped close to $100. Just keep in mind there are two major stepping versions to look for: SR0H8 is C1 stepping. VT-x is supported but VT-d is supposedly not supported SR0KX is the C2 stepping with the VT-d fix which may be important for virtualization pass-through

  16. Old cards, like nVidia Vanta LT 16MB: ...have no holes around GPU, so that any cooler must be glued on them by some heat conductive glue. Such glues are for example supplied with the Arctic Cooler Mono Plus VGA heatsink. But when I tried to use it today, I find out, that both tubes - altrough never used before - turned internaly into chewing-gum  That is somewhat surprising to pierce a never opened thermal adhesive to find out, that it is completely useless... http://www.arctic.ac/eu_en/accelero-mono-plus.html "Thermal Adhesive (included)" ... So that makes me wonder, what others use and with what experiences. Because I need some replacement…

I'm looking to get a Live XP install on a USB drive that I can plug in and boot to. I know it'll be a bit slow (and no this isn't for Z170). In googling, I've found that there are tons of methods so I was hoping that someone could share their experience and which method they used. To calarify, I'm not looking to install XP from a USB drive, I'm looking to install XP on a USB drive.

Here you go all tested 6.4+ 01,05 etc on ASrock OC Formula with 1.7v. They can do more on 32m etc for sure. Most with 4c 4t not 2c 2t. You guys know the potential of these batches. I tested each for like ten - twenty mins each. Cold bug on em differs between -125- -135. They boot win7 on air at 1.275v or less and have low VID. Get em while you still can. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-000-8P

Just throwing out a bait to see if anyone of you AGP Overclockers got a "naked" bios file for the AM2NF3 motherboard laying around. I think a corrupt bios is Behind That my card totaly refuse to boot and I've had no success with hot flashing it due to ASRock bad habit of hiding the bios file in the flasher software. So anyone got the file saved away or the option to take a backup of thier Bios with something like "Universal BIOS Backup ToolKit" and help me out? Bios version 3.30 is very much preffered as it Allows the use of Phenom2s
