Crew Antinomy Posted February 17, 2015 Crew Posted February 17, 2015 There's been a good idea floating around - of a competition aimed on old school hardware. And I need opinions on what tests and hardware should be used. I invite everyone interested to make a suggestion. I'll stack them up and send to Massman to organize the competition. A good name for a competition would be nice to come up to as well. My thought is as follows: "Old school is best school" competition. Stage is 3 months (old means rare means time to find the required hardware). Hardware starting from socket 5/7 and up to 478/939. VGA - up to GF 5/ATI 9xxx. Some multiprocessor action (I'm thinking of Pentium 2-3 and socket A). Only older benchmarks - good old Super pi, Pifast, wPrime. No new tests like Cinebench, HWBot Prime. No "strange" (bugged) tests like 3DMark 2000/PCMark 2004. So feel free to post and prepare your oldies Quote
TerraRaptor Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 1. LCC for s939 @3.0GHz - spi1m 2. Wprime 32m s370 - I need to master this Quote
ZFeSS Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I'd like to see SPi 32M for 478 and 939 they are fast enough to this. And I prefer classic platforms for classic hardware, so 775 and AM2NF3 restrictions for GPU should be fair, DDR2 for 478 also Will be Special Olympics for non-standard hw? Cyrix, PoverVR, S3 etc? What about Aquamark? I forsee some troubles with wrapper. 1. LCC for s939 @3.0GHz - spi1m 3GHz for 939 is not low clock in general. If you go subzero I think it should be no limits. Agree with TerraRaptor for LLC idea. Propose 2800MHz for 939, 4000-4200 for 478, 1600 for 370 (no P3-S allowed) and 2400 for Socket A. Quote
Luebke Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 (edited) i have an idea for a whole competition for nearly everybody, because it includes amd, intel, nvidia, ati, arm and others. it´s not oldschool only, but i guess it might have stages for nearly every overclocker. Stage 1, CPU: wprime Athlon vs. Pentium (only cpus named athlon or pentium are allowed, no opteron, no celeron, no duron, no xeon...) 1: 462 vs. 478 2: 939 vs. 775 (netburst) 3: AM2+ vs. 775 (core) 4: Athlon vs. Pentium "fullout" (exsample athlon 860, pentium G3258) Stage 2, GPU: 3D Mark 01 NVidia vs. ATi 1: Radeon 9k vs. GeForce 5k 2. Radeon X vs. GeForce 6k 3. Radeon 1k vs. GeForce 7k 4. Radeon 2k vs. GeForce 8k (G80) Stage 3, different stuff: 1: FSB S 775 (or different socket, something cheap for fun) 2: Ram-clock @ CL7 (it´s harder than easily buy a ddr 3000-kit ) 3: HWBOT-Prime @ Smartphone (fullout) 4: HWBOT Prime @ Raspberry Pi 5: AGP: Aquamark non-NVidia/ATi (3DFX, SiS, S3, Kyro...) Rasparthe Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Personally would love to see an AGP category that doesn't include 775 Core 2/Quad or AM2+/AM3 chips, or perhaps just ban all Asrock motherboards from the competition.... Quote
havli Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 (edited) Yeah, GPU and CPU should be of a similar age. Couple of my thoughts... Classic 3D: 1. 3DMark 99 + Voodoo2/Banshee/Riva TNT/Savage 3D/etc. + Pentium 2/K6-2 2. 3DMark 2000/2001SE + Voodoo5/GeForce 256/Radeon 7200/Rage Fury MAXX + Pentium 3 / Athlon (SDRAM) 3. 3DMark 01/Aquamark + GeForce 3/Ti/Radeon 8500 + Pentium 4 Willamette / AXP Palomino 4. 3DMark 03/Aquamark + GeForce4 Ti /FX/Radeon 9xxx + Pentium 4 Northwood / Gallatin / Prescott / Athlon64 single-core CPU limited 3D: 1. 3DMark99 + Pentium MMX / Pentium Pro / K6 / Cyrix 6x86 + any VGA 2. 3DMark99 + Celeron A / K6-2 / K6-III + Any VGA 3. 3DMark 01 + P3 / P4 Willamette / Athlon + any VGA 4. 3DMark 05 + Socket 754 2D: 1. 486 SuperPI 1M 2. Socket7 up to K6-2 (no on-die L2 cache) SuperPI 32M 3. Dual PIII / Dual AXP + Cinebench 2003 4. P4 Willamette S423 PIFast 5. Pentium 4 RDRAM + MaxxMem Read Bandwidth 6. VIA KT133 + MaxxMem Read Bandwidth 7. EDO RAM + MaxxMem Read Bandwidth 8. Netburst CPU-Z frequency - % overclock 9. Socket 5/7 Pentium P54 (SMP allowed) - Wprime 32M Some of these could be LCC, to show the maximum effectivity (in both 2D and 3D). Edited February 17, 2015 by havli Quote
JunkDogg Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Another idea might to be have stages set by year of manufacture. Example; Stage 1 - 32m - Only CPU and Motherboard manufactured/released in 2005. Stage 2 - 3Dmark01 - only cpu, motherboard and gpu released in 2001. etc, etc Quote
Mr.Scott Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) No input here Alex. Pick something. I'll run whatever you put up. Edited February 18, 2015 by Mr.Scott Quote
Luebke Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) 1. 486 SuperPI 1M after 3 days running "not exact in round" :woot: but i like the idea hey, whats about a "longest lasting..." competition? the longest lasting super pi 1m-run for cpu (486 ftw ) and longest lasting aquamark-run for gpu? the oldest hardware would be the best another idea: last century-challange: only hardware cpu AND gpu from 1999 and older is allowed thats pentium1, amd k6, cyrix 6x86, voodoo2, riva tnt2, s3 savage4.... Edited February 18, 2015 by Luebke Quote
TerraRaptor Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 thats pentium1, amd k6, cyrix 6x86, voodoo2, riva tnt2, s3 savage4.... I'm too young for this sh*)) Quote
Luebke Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 but newer hardware isn´t from last century Quote
Aleslammer Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 If I’ve got it I’ll bench it but you might give a little lead time for folks to locate if their lacking the needed hardware. I’m with Rasparthe on the AGP side of things. Quote
Crew Antinomy Posted February 21, 2015 Author Crew Posted February 21, 2015 Any thoughts about them competition name? I came up to three options: 1) Old school is best school competition 2) Good ol' school competition 3) Some love for Old School Hardware Competition Quote
Kotori Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Any thoughts about them competition name? I came up to three options: 1) Old school is best school competition 2) Good ol' school competition 3) Some love for Old School Hardware Competition choose the 1, best school sounds good hahaha. I want to do the old bench, Final Reality, N-Bench, Something. Quote
MrBreeze Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 Top 5 names for an old school OC comp in no particular order: 1. My grandma stole my Core i7 2. The dotcom bubble memorial open 3. Down the K7 hole 4. U can take your EFI and shove it 5. SSE Smackdown I'm with Rasparthe, Aleslammer and others on some kind of CPU-bound AGP stage; at the very least no K10 or Core 2? Quote
macsbeach98 Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 Sounds good I have no preference, what ever comes up I will be in. I have got most things back to Socket7 and Geforce2/Radeon7000 Quote
Luebke Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 i like this one 1. My grandma stole my Core i7 but SSE Smackdown sounds great, too. Quote
TASOS Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 Some of my friends (here in my drawer) dont even support SSE So , lets have an extra stage ... MMX smackdown :battle: Now Let's just start whatever stage you like. I'm all in , with whatever hardware i currently own. I already started refurbishing my motherboards. Too many leaking capacitors Let the fun begin !!! Quote
Luebke Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 i want a "oldest..." stage like in the turrican-challange. but this time without limitation because of the benchmark. lets see the very oldest hardware of overclockers ever Quote
TerraRaptor Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Calculate 1M using just paper and pencil (or even sand and stick)! Quote
frag_ Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Some silly ideas: Socket 7 - MaxxMem Bandwidth Slot 1 - wPrime 32m, dual setups are welcome! Socket 370 - PCMark 2005, dual setups are fine Socket 462 - Low-Clock challenge, 32M under one hour or similar Socket 432 - Reference Clock Socket 487 - 3DMark2001, any videocard, mobile CPUs with ct-479 are fine too =) Socket 754 - Memory Clock Bonus category: SuperPi 1M on a CPU not produced by Intel, AMD, VIA (Cyrix before C3 is OK). Crew Don_Dan Posted February 24, 2015 Crew Posted February 24, 2015 I'd like to see a DDR CL2.5 memory clock stage. Concerning the name: HWBOT Nostalgia Cup Quote
Luebke Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 @frag: some nice ideas but PCMark 2005 is crap to me >_< i like the bonus category best. thats really rare and old stuff Quote
